How to Join dim asset to dim_vulnerability

Hey Gang,

My Objectives with the query are to pull

  • Hostname
    -ip address
    -tag name
    -CVE Specific to CISA KEV

The issue I’m having is there is no relationship between dim asset to dim vulnerability and I’m sort of at a jam. I’m not the strongest when it comes to Joins.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

You’ll most likely want to use fact_asset_vulnerability_instance. That will give you a super long list. Basically one line for every combination of the 4 columns. You will most likely want to use aggregate functions on the tag column and a group by on the asset name, ip.

Also for the CVE are you saying you’re going to have a WHERE statement filtering down to a specific vulnerability?

So the main issue with this will be that we don’t have a straight CVE column. We use the nexpose_id which usually prefixes the CVE with context. For example:

So this brings up the issue that you can’t just do a list because it’s looking for exact values. You would either need to run this against our nexpose IDs and make the list off of those OR swap out the IN list for multiple lines of OR statement using the LIKE command and do ‘%CVE-1234-12345’

You could technically create an asset group (or tag) off of those CVE-IDs and then use that in your query instead. But that would be super tiring and manual.

I’m not entirely sure your specific reasons for querying against the CISA KEV but we do have something similar in our database that show all exploits for vulnerabilities. For example if a vulnerability has known Metasploit or Exploit DB exploit of a known Malware Kit associated with it.

Actually the Asset group tag for the CVE is a solid idea. I’ll probably go that route considering I have the pipe already write up for it.

So to clarify the reasoning. In InsightVM Query Builder, CISA.KEV exist. It allows for tracking Specific CISA Vuln’s. My C Suite loves it but they want to be able to pipe it through SQL. My CSM said that there wasn’t a specific function like CISA. KEV and I would have to literally do

Yea there is definitely discrepancies between what can be performed in the Query Builder (cloud component) and the SQL Query (local console database). Unfortunately like I said, in the SQL database it isn’t as straightforward so you have two options.

Option 1:
Do the dynamic Tag through the UI and create 790 lines :cold_sweat:

Option 2:
Paste those 790 lines into excel and do some concatenation to add a % symbol before each one and OR dv.nexpose_id like

Then you could paste them back into the SQL Query like so:

I want to report these Specific Vulnerabilities with the tag containing ‘N2-’

That’s going to depend on how many “N2-” tags you have. If it’s just one tag or a couple it may be easier to just do it through the GUI like in your picture. Otherwise if there are a lot of those tags then I would put it in the query to scope down further using a WHERE statement of

You would need to create a temporary table like so to query only those tags and then use that to join instead of directly joining dim_tag or dim_tag_asset.
